Since the patient's Work of breathing (WOB) includes the work of expanding the thorax in addition to the work of expanding the lungs, WOB is the area bounded by the straight line whose slope is the chest wall compliance and the esophageal pressure (x-axis) and lung capacity (y-axis) plot curves in the inspiratory phase [21]
