The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) plotting sensitivity vs. 1-specificity are shown separately for the University Health Consortium (UHC, red) and Mortality Probability Model III (MPM-III, blue). The area under the curve (AUC) for the UHC curve was 0.90 (95 % CI 0.86–0.93). The AUC for the MPM-III was 0.87 (95 % CI 0.83–0.91). The curves were not statistically different (p = 0.28). The diagonal line shows where there is no discriminating ability (AUC = 0.5)
